Opossum Rescue and Transport

Our opossum rescue service helps opossums that are hurt, orphaned or stuck somewhere they can’t get out of. The same respect for wildlife that guides our bee work applies here. We safely contain the animal and drive it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who can care for it.

Opossums are North America’s only marsupial. They are shy, they rarely fight, and when frightened they may go limp and “play dead.” That doesn’t mean they are hurt, but it does mean they shouldn’t be handled by hand.

Signs an Opossum Needs Rescue

  • An opossum that is injured, bleeding or can’t walk normally
  • Young opossums alone, especially if they are cold, weak or covered in flies
  • A mother hit on the road, since young may still be in her pouch
  • An opossum trapped in a window well, pool, trash can, fence or garage
  • An animal caught by a dog or cat, even if it looks fine
  • An opossum out in daylight that seems confused or unable to move away

How Our Opossum Rescue Works

The same four steps on every job

1

Call or Text

Send a photo and your location to 419-614-6445 so we can see what’s going on.

2

Keep It Safe

We walk you through keeping kids and pets away and the animal quiet until we get there.

3

Contain Gently

The opossum is carefully contained in a ventilated carrier, without bare-hand handling.

4

Transport to Rehab

We drive it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for care and, when possible, release.

What to Do Until We Arrive

  • Keep children and pets indoors or well away from the animal
  • Don’t pick it up with bare hands
  • If it’s safe, cover it loosely with a ventilated box or laundry basket
  • Keep the area quiet and dark, and don’t try to feed it or give it water
  • Note exactly where you found it, which matters for release later

Healthy adult opossums passing through a yard are normal and usually move on by themselves. Rescue is for animals that are hurt, orphaned or trapped.

Why a Beekeeper Does Opossum Rescue

Our whole company is built on a simple idea: if an animal can be saved, save it. That’s why honeybees are relocated instead of sprayed, and why opossums in trouble get a ride to people trained to care for them. Opossum Rescue FAQs

About Opossum Rescue

What does opossum rescue include?

We safely contain an opossum that is injured, orphaned or trapped and drive it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. The rehabilitator handles care and release.

Will you remove a healthy opossum from under my deck?

Our service is a rescue for opossums in trouble. If you’re not sure whether an animal needs help, send a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

Do you handle other wildlife?

Opossums are the only mammals we rescue. Our other services are wasp and hornet nest removal, honeybee and bumblebee relocation, and cicada killer relocation.

Found an Opossum?

Is an opossum playing dead hurt?

Not necessarily. Going limp is an involuntary reaction to fear. Give it space and keep pets away. If it doesn’t move off after a while, or you see an injury, call or text us.

I found baby opossums. What should I do?

Don’t feed them or give them water. Keep them in a ventilated box somewhere quiet and dark, away from pets, and call or text 419-614-6445 with a photo.

Is it safe to touch an opossum?

No wild animal should be handled with bare hands. Use a box or basket to cover it, and leave the rest to us.
