Bees in a Soffit or Porch Ceiling: What You’ll See and What Happens Next
A steady stream of bees going in and out of a corner of your roofline is hard to miss. Bees in a soffit or porch ceiling are usually honeybees that have moved into the dry, sheltered space inside the overhang. MAAREC notes that honeybees nest in sheltered, dark enclosures, including porch roofs and spaces between wall studs (MAAREC Publication 3.6). Here is what you’ll see, what not to do, and how a live removal from an overhang works.
Signs of Bees in a Soffit
- Same gap, every day. Bees flying in and out of one opening for more than a day or two point to a colony, not a passing swarm. See will bees leave on their own?
- A hum overhead. On warm afternoons you may hear it through the porch ceiling.
- Stains or drips. Dark staining, wax or honey seeping from boards is a sign of comb above.
- Bees near porch lights or indoors. See bees in the house.
Honeybees or Wasps?
Wasps love soffits too. Honeybees are fuzzy and brown to amber, and fly in a steady line. Yellowjackets are smooth, shiny and bright yellow and black. If it’s wasps, see wasps in your attic or soffit and honeybee vs. yellowjacket.
Why Overhangs Attract Colonies
Research on how swarms pick a home found that scouts prefer an enclosed cavity of roughly 40 liters with a small entrance, several meters off the ground (Seeley and Morse, 1978). A boxed-in soffit or the space above a porch ceiling can match that closely. UGA advises caulking likely entry points such as gaps in siding and openings around plumbing or wires, which applies to loose soffit panels and fixture gaps too.
Why You Shouldn’t Seal the Entrance
Sealing the gap traps the colony. The bees may look for another way out, sometimes into the house. Even if the colony dies, UGA warns that comb can melt and stain interior walls with honey and wax (UGA Extension C824). The comb has to come out.
How a Live Cutout From an Overhang Works
- Find the comb. A thermal camera shows where the warm comb sits in the overhang.
- Open the soffit or ceiling. We remove panels or boards carefully to reach the colony.
- Move the colony comb and all. Comb with brood is secured so the colony keeps it.
- Clean the cavity. Leftover wax is cleaned off so new swarms aren’t drawn back. See bees came back after removal?
The bees go to The Mindful Beekeeper, through an inspection station, and into Apiary #1 in Loudon Township.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can they stay?
UGA suggests a leave-alone approach can work when the entrance is high and far from people and pets, like a roof peak. A porch ceiling over the front door usually isn’t that spot.
Is the porch light part of the problem?
Gaps around a fixture can be an entry point into the ceiling cavity. Don’t remove a fixture with bees behind it yourself. Tell us where it is so we can plan around the wiring.
How do I get ready?

Bees in Your Overhang?
Honeybees are always relocated, never exterminated. Rescued colonies go to The Mindful Beekeeper, pass through an inspection station, and then join Apiary #1 in Loudon Township. Honeybee relocation from walls and other structures is being scheduled for Spring 2027. Call or text 419-614-6445 or use our contact page to tell us what you are seeing, and read about humane honeybee removal and relocation.
