Do Fake Wasp Nests, Traps and Peppermint Oil Really Work?
Search for wasp control ideas and you will find plenty of products and home remedies: paper decoys that look like a hornet nest, sweet-smelling traps, and peppermint oil sprays. They are inexpensive and easy, so it is natural to want them to work. As a pesticide-free company in Northwest Ohio, Eastern Indiana and Southern Michigan, we get asked about fake wasp nests, traps and essential oils all the time. Here is an honest look at what each one can and cannot do.
Do Fake Wasp Nests Work?
The Idea Behind Fake Wasp Nests
Decoy nests are usually gray paper or fabric balls made to look like a bald-faced hornet or paper wasp nest. The theory is that wasps are territorial, so a queen looking for a nest site will see the decoy and go elsewhere to avoid a rival colony.
What We See in Practice
- Little reliable evidence: We are not aware of strong research showing decoys keep wasps away. Some people report fewer nests, but that is hard to separate from normal year-to-year changes.
- Wasps often build right next to them: We regularly find paper wasp nests on the same porch, sometimes within a few feet of a decoy.
- They do nothing for hidden nests: Yellowjackets in the ground or inside walls never see the decoy.
- They do not affect an existing nest: A decoy will not make a colony that is already built move away.
If you like the look, a decoy will not hurt anything, but please do not rely on it in place of inspection and sealing gaps.
Do Wasp Traps Work?
What Traps Can Do
Bait traps lure wasps with sweet or protein-based attractants. They can catch a lot of yellowjackets, and in some settings they reduce the number of foragers bothering a small area for a while.

The Limits of Traps
- They catch workers, not the nest. A large yellowjacket colony can have thousands of workers and keeps producing more as long as the queen is alive.
- They can draw more wasps in. A trap next to your patio may attract wasps from neighboring nests to the very spot you want to keep clear. If you use them, hang them well away from where people sit.
- They mostly catch yellowjackets. They are much less useful for paper wasps and hornets.
- They can catch beneficial insects depending on the bait, including honeybees with sweet baits.
Does Peppermint Oil Keep Wasps Away?
Peppermint and other essential oils are popular natural repellents. Some essential oil blends may discourage wasps from an area for a short time. The problems:
- It wears off quickly. Oils evaporate, and the effect fades within hours or a day.
- It does not affect an established nest. A colony will not abandon its nest, brood and queen because of a scent.
- Spraying a nest is risky. Approaching a nest to spray anything, even a “natural” product, can trigger a defensive attack.
- Strong oils can bother pets. Some essential oils are irritating or harmful to cats and dogs. Check with your veterinarian before using them where pets spend time.
Other Home Remedies We Hear About
- Soap and water sprays: Can kill wasps they hit directly, but you have to get close to the nest and hidden nests are out of reach.
- Water, gasoline or fire: Dangerous and ineffective for ground and wall nests. Never use gasoline or fire.
- Plugging the hole: Can send wasps into your home or out a new exit. See DIY wasp nest removal mistakes.
What Actually Works
- Seal gaps in the off-season so wasps cannot nest inside walls, soffits and attics. See wasp prevention.
- Inspect in spring to catch starter nests while they are tiny. See spring wasp queens.
- Reduce food sources like open trash and fallen fruit.
- Get professional wasp removal for nests near doors, play areas and walkways. Our pesticide-free approach removes the colony without spraying chemicals around your home.
A Word About Bees
Please do not use traps, sprays or oils on honeybees or bumblebees. They are important pollinators, and we always relocate them. See humane bumblebee removal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I hang a fake nest anyway?
It is harmless, but do not count on it. Keep checking eaves and porches in spring.
Can traps get rid of a yellowjacket nest?
No. They remove foragers, but the nest and queen remain.
