Every summer, we hear the same worried question from homeowners: “Is that a murder hornet?” The short answer for our region is reassuring. As of October 2026, there are no confirmed detections of the northern giant hornet, the insect nicknamed the “murder hornet,” or the invasive yellow-legged hornet anywhere in Ohio, Indiana, or Michigan. This article explains what is actually known about the giant hornet in Ohio question, what you are most likely seeing instead, and what to do if you spot something unusual in Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, or Southern Michigan.

What Is the “Murder Hornet”?

The insect the media called the “murder hornet” or “Asian giant hornet” is officially named the northern giant hornet (Vespa mandarina). The Entomological Society of America adopted that common name in 2022.

• Size: Queens can approach 2 inches long, making it the world’s largest hornet.
• Appearance: A large, entirely orange-yellow head, dark thorax, and a banded abdomen.
• Threat: It can attack and destroy honeybee colonies, which is the main concern for beekeepers and agriculture.

Giant Hornet Ohio Update: The Current Facts

Here is where things stand based on state and federal agency information available in October 2026:

• Northern giant hornet: First confirmed in North America in 2019 in Washington State and British Columbia. After an aggressive eradication effort, the Washington State Department of Agriculture declared it eradicated in Washington in 2024. It has not been confirmed in Ohio, Indiana, or Michigan.
• Yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina): A different invasive Asian hornet, first detected in the U.S. near Savannah, Georgia, in 2023. According to USDA APHIS, it has since been detected in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, where agencies continue trapping and nest removal. In spring 2026, a single live yellow-legged hornet was also found aboard a cargo ship at a port in Vancouver, Washington, prompting surveys there.
• Ohio: The Ohio Department of Agriculture lists both species on its invasive insect watch list so residents know to report them, but neither is currently known to occur in the state.

In other words, there is no documented giant hornet population in our service area. That said, new invasive species can arrive at any time, so awareness and reporting still matter.

What You Are Probably Seeing Instead

Nearly every “murder hornet” report in our area turns out to be one of these native or long-established insects:

European hornet

The most common look-alike. European hornets are the largest wasp in Ohio, about an inch long, reddish-brown and yellow, and they fly at night around porch lights. They have been in the eastern U.S. since the 1800s. See our full guide to European hornets in Ohio and Indiana.

Cicada killer

A huge solitary wasp, up to about 1.5 inches, that digs burrows in sandy or bare soil in July and August. It looks fearsome but very rarely stings people. Learn more in our article on mud daubers and cicada killers.

Bald-faced hornet

Black and white with a large gray paper nest. Actually an aerial yellowjacket, and much smaller than a giant hornet.

Other look-alikes

USDA lists several more common insects that get confused with invasive hornets, including yellowjackets, paper wasps, the great golden digger wasp, hoverflies, and the elm sawfly.

How to Tell the Difference

• Northern giant hornet: Very large, with a bright orange-yellow head that looks almost cartoonish. European hornets have a reddish-brown top of the head and a yellow face.
• Teardrop markings: European hornets have dark bands on the abdomen with teardrop-shaped extensions. Ohio State Extension notes the northern giant hornet lacks these teardrops.
• Yellow-legged hornet: Mostly dark body, a yellow-orange band near the tip of the abdomen, and distinctly yellow lower legs. Smaller than a European hornet.
• Behavior: Yellow-legged hornets “hawk,” hovering in front of beehives to snatch bees in flight.

What to Do If You Think You Have Found One

1. Do not disturb it or its nest. Keep a safe distance.
2. Take a clear photo only if you can do so safely.
3. Record the exact location, such as an address or a map pin.
4. Report it to your state. In Ohio, use the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Ohio Plant Pest Reporter. In Indiana, contact the DNR Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology. In Michigan, contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Your county extension office can also help with identification.

USDA advises that only state or federal responders should remove a suspected invasive hornet nest, because a botched removal could help it spread.

Why This Matters to a Beekeeper-Owned Company

Northwest Ohio Wasp Removal is owned by a beekeeper, so invasive hornets are not just a headline for us. Both the northern giant hornet and the yellow-legged hornet prey heavily on honeybees. We keep an eye on agency updates and encourage everyone in our service area to report anything suspicious. At the same time, there is no reason to panic over every large wasp. Most of the time, it is a familiar insect with a predictable life cycle.
