Swarm of Bees or Wasps? What’s Hanging From Your Tree

/in /by

Something is hanging from the tree in your yard, and from the patio you can’t tell what it is. Is it a swarm of bees or wasps? Up close the difference is obvious, but you don’t want to get that close to the wrong one. Here’s how to tell a honeybee swarm from a paper wasp or hornet nest, and what to do about each.

Swarm of Bees or Wasps: Quick ID

Honeybee swarm

  • Made of bees. A swarm is a cluster of living honeybees. The surface moves and shimmers.
  • Appears suddenly. It wasn’t there yesterday. UGA Extension says swarms temporarily cluster on an object such as a branch while scouts look for a permanent home, and usually move on within about 24 hours (UGA Extension C824).
  • Often basketball-sized or smaller, and often in spring and early summer.
  • Usually gentle. MAAREC notes swarming bees are generally gentle because they’re full of honey (MAAREC Publication 3.6).

A hornet nest is a gray paper structure with a smooth, layered surface.

Hornet or wasp nest

  • Made of paper. Bald-faced hornets build a gray paper nest with a smooth, layered surface and a single entrance hole. Wasps fly in and out of that hole.
  • Grows over weeks. A nest gets bigger through the summer. Often people only notice it when leaves fall.
  • Can be hidden. OSU warns that bald-faced hornet nests may be hidden in foliage, which is a risk for anyone trimming (OSU Buckeye Yard and Garden onLine).
  • Defended. OSU notes these wasps are seldom aggressive away from the nest, but they defend it.

Side-by-side checklist

  • Texture: moving bees (swarm) vs. smooth gray paper (nest).
  • Timing: showed up today (swarm) vs. grew over weeks (nest).
  • Traffic: bees landing and taking off all over the cluster (swarm) vs. wasps using one hole (nest).
  • Shape: a loose, drooping clump that may shift (swarm) vs. a firm, enclosed structure (nest).

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the swarm leave if I wait?

Usually, yes. But if scouts choose your wall, it becomes a colony. See will bees leave on their own?

Could it be bumblebees?

Bumblebees don’t swarm like this. Their nests are usually in the ground. See bumblebee nest in the ground.

Can you tell from a photo?

Usually. Text us a photo from a safe distance.

Not Sure What You’re Looking At?

Honeybees are always relocated, never exterminated. Rescued colonies go to The Mindful Beekeeper, pass through an inspection station, and then join Apiary #1 in Loudon Township. Honeybee relocation from walls and other structures is being scheduled for Spring 2027. Myth: Will Bees Leave on Their Own if You Wait? Swarms vs. Wall Colonies

/in /by

“Just wait, they’ll leave.” It’s the most common advice people get about bees, and it’s half right. The answer to will bees leave on their own depends on whether you’re looking at a swarm or a colony. A swarm is a temporary cluster that usually moves on. A colony that has already moved into your wall, soffit or chimney has found its home and is building comb. Waiting usually means a bigger colony and more comb to remove later.

Will Bees Leave on Their Own? Swarms Usually Do

When a colony reproduces, part of it leaves with a queen and clusters in a temporary spot while scouts search for a new home. UGA Extension describes swarms as often basketball-sized, gentle, and usually relocating within about 24 hours (UGA Extension C824). Our own experience matches: a swarm often moves on within a day or two.

MAAREC notes that swarming bees are generally gentle because their stomachs are full of honey (MAAREC Publication 3.6). That doesn’t make it safe to poke at one, but it does mean a swarm on a branch is rarely an emergency.

A hanging swarm is a temporary stop while scout bees look for a permanent home.

Established Colonies Don’t Leave

Once bees move into a cavity, they build wax comb, the queen begins laying, and the colony stores honey. UGA notes that bees can live in a structure indefinitely, and a cavity that once housed bees tends to attract new swarms. Signs you have a colony rather than a swarm:

  • Bees fly in and out of the same gap day after day, through more than a day or two.
  • You hear a hum in the wall on warm afternoons.
  • Dark staining, wax or honey appears near the entrance.

See honeybees in walls and bees in your chimney.

When Leaving Them Alone Can Work

UGA Extension notes that the natural nest site of honeybees is a hollow in an old tree, and that if a colony’s entrance is far from people and pets, such as near the peak of a roof, a leave-alone approach is worth considering. If the flyway is near a door, a walkway or a play area, it’s a more serious situation. Either way, the bees aren’t going to pack up on their own. See bees in a tree.

Why Waiting Can Make It Worse

A colony keeps building comb. MAAREC warns that comb left in a wall can attract pests and that honey can soak into walls and stain them. Killing the bees doesn’t solve that either. The comb has to come out. See why beekeepers never exterminate honeybees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a colony stay in a wall?

UGA notes that bees can live in a structure indefinitely. Colonies grow through spring and summer, so the longer you wait, the more comb there usually is. See how many bees in a hive.

Can I just seal the hole?

No. Sealing traps the colony, and the bees may find another way out, sometimes into the house.

Is swarm removal free?

Exposed swarm removal is free through The Mindful Beekeeper. See honeybee swarms.

Is it a swarm of bees or wasps?

See swarm of bees or wasps? for a quick ID guide.
