What Happens to Wasp Nests in Winter? Do Wasps Come Back to the Same Nest?

/in /by

When the leaves drop, many homeowners suddenly notice a big gray nest in a tree or under the eaves that was hidden all summer. That leads to two of the most common questions we get: what happens to wasp nests in winter, and will the wasps come back to the same nest next year? Here is how the yearly cycle works for wasps in Northwest Ohio, Eastern Indiana and Southern Michigan.

What Happens to Wasp Nests in Winter?

For the social wasps in our region, including yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, aerial yellowjackets, European hornets and paper wasps, a colony lives for only one season. Here is how it ends:

  • Late summer: The colony switches from raising workers to raising new queens and males.
  • Fall: New queens and males leave the nest and mate.
  • After hard frosts: The old queen, the workers and the males die. Food runs out and cold weather finishes off the colony.
  • Winter: The nest is left empty.

Only the newly mated queens survive. Each one finds a sheltered spot to spend the winter alone, in a state of dormancy, until spring.

Where Do Wasp Queens Spend the Winter?

  • Under loose bark and inside rotting logs and stumps
  • In leaf litter and soil
  • In cracks and crevices in buildings
  • Inside attics, wall voids, sheds and garages
  • Behind shutters, siding and window trim

Queens that overwinter inside homes sometimes become active on warm winter days or when the heat comes on, and wander into living spaces. Our article on wasps inside your house in fall and winter explains why.

Do Wasps Come Back to the Same Nest?

No. Yellowjackets, hornets and paper wasps do not reuse old nests. Each spring, a queen starts a brand-new nest from scratch. An old, empty nest left on your house will not “wake up” in spring.

That said, wasps may build near the same spot again. The same features that attracted last year’s queen, such as shelter, a gap in the soffit or a quiet corner of the porch, attract new queens too. Some new queens also overwinter close to where they were raised. That is why the same eave or shed can have a nest year after year, even though the old nest is never reused.

What About Bees in Winter?

  • Honeybees are the big exception. A honeybee colony survives the winter as a cluster inside its hive, eating stored honey and keeping warm. A honeybee colony in a wall or chimney stays active year after year. See honeybees in walls.
  • Bumblebees follow the wasp pattern. The colony dies in fall, and new queens overwinter alone, usually in the soil.

Should You Remove an Empty Nest in Winter?

An old paper nest in a tree or on the eaves is usually harmless once the colony has died. It will slowly break down in the weather, and birds sometimes tear nests open looking for leftover larvae. You can leave it or take it down. Before you do:

  • Make sure it is truly empty. Wait until after several hard frosts. On a mild fall day, a late colony may still be active.
  • Make sure it is a wasp nest. Honeybee colonies in walls, soffits or trees are active all winter.
  • Use caution on ladders. Take down high nests only if it is safe to do so.

Use Winter to Prevent Next Year’s Nests

Winter is the best time to seal gaps, because colonies are gone and you will not trap active wasps inside:

  • Repair soffits, fascia and siding gaps where wasps entered last summer.
  • Screen gable, attic and dryer vents.
  • Fill holes in the yard used by ground nests once the colony is dead.
  • Note where nests were so you can check those spots first in spring.

Spring Wasp Queens: Why Early Wasp Nest Removal Prevents Big Summer Nests

/in /by

Every large summer wasp nest starts with one insect. In spring, spring wasp queens wake up from winter and each one builds a tiny nest by herself. If you find and deal with those nests early, you can prevent the big, defensive colonies that cause most summer stings. Here is how the spring start-up works, what to look for and how early wasp nest removal can make your summer easier in Northwest Ohio, Eastern Indiana and Southern Michigan.

How Spring Wasp Queens Start a Colony

In our region, social wasp colonies die off in late fall. Only newly mated queens survive the winter, tucked into sheltered spots. When spring warms up, those queens become active and start the cycle over:

  • Waking up: On warm spring days, queens leave their winter shelter. You may see large single wasps slowly flying along siding, fences or the ground, inspecting cracks and corners.
  • Feeding: Queens feed on nectar and other sugars to build up energy.
  • Choosing a site: Each queen looks for a sheltered spot: an eave, a gap in the soffit, an old rodent burrow, a shrub or a quiet corner of a shed.
  • Building alone: She chews wood fiber into paper, builds a handful of cells and lays an egg in each one.
  • Doing it all: Until her first daughters become adults, the queen forages, builds and feeds the larvae on her own.

Once those first workers emerge, they take over foraging and building, and the queen focuses on laying eggs. From that point, the colony can grow quickly.

What a Spring Starter Nest Looks Like

  • Paper wasps: A small open comb, often just a few to a couple dozen cells, hanging from a single stalk. Usually one wasp, the queen, is on it.
  • Yellowjackets and hornets: A small paper ball, about the size of a golf ball or smaller, often with an open bottom, attached to an eave, branch or the inside of a cavity. Ground nests start underground and are rarely seen at this stage.

Why Early Wasp Nest Removal Prevents Big Summer Nests

  • One wasp instead of hundreds or thousands. In spring, a nest has a single queen and no workers to defend it.
  • Smaller is safer. A tiny nest is easier to deal with and less likely to lead to stings.
  • It stops the colony before it grows. A yellowjacket colony that starts with one queen in April can reach thousands of workers by late summer. See why wasps get aggressive in late summer.
  • Hidden nests are easier to catch. A queen flying into a soffit gap in May is a warning sign you can act on before a large nest forms inside. See wasps in your attic or soffit.

One important note: native paper wasps are beneficial predators of garden pests, and we always relocate them, even in spring. Early action matters most for yellowjackets, hornets and European paper wasps near doors, decks and play areas. See native vs. European paper wasps.

Your Spring Wasp Checklist

Walk around your property every week or two from April into June and check:

  • Eaves, soffits, porch ceilings and window frames
  • Deck railings, the underside of deck boards and stair stringers
  • Grills, mailboxes, playsets and outdoor furniture. See wasp nests in mailboxes, playsets and outdoor furniture.
  • Sheds, garages and barns, especially rafters and door headers
  • Shrubs, hedges and low tree branches
  • Gaps in siding, soffits and vents where wasps may be going in and out

Also watch for a single wasp flying repeatedly into the same hole in the ground or a gap in the house. That is often a queen provisioning a new nest.

Why Bees Are Different

The spring queen strategy applies to bumblebees too, but bumblebees are pollinators and are always relocated, never removed. Honeybees work completely differently. They do not start colonies from a single queen in spring. Instead, established colonies swarm. If you see a cluster of bees on a branch in spring, read our honeybee swarm guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I spray a small spring nest myself?

We do not recommend sprays. They put pesticide around your home and can harm beneficial insects. Text us a photo and we will tell you the best option.

Do fake nests stop spring queens?

The evidence is weak. See do fake wasp nests, traps and peppermint oil work.

Wasps Inside Your House in Fall and Winter: Where They Come From

/in /by

It is the middle of November, the yard has been quiet for weeks, and a wasp is crawling slowly across your living room window. Finding wasps inside your house in fall and winter is very common across Northwest Ohio, Eastern Indiana and Southern Michigan. In most cases, it does not mean there is an active nest in your walls. Here is where those wasps come from, when it is a sign of something bigger and what to do about it.

Why You Find Wasps Inside Your House in Fall and Winter

Overwintering Queens

In fall, social wasp colonies die off and only newly mated queens survive. Each queen looks for a protected place to spend the winter. In nature, that might be under bark or in a log. Around homes, queens crawl into attics, wall voids, gaps around windows, behind siding and shutters, and into garages and sheds. Paper wasp queens in particular are known for overwintering in and on buildings.

On warm winter days, or when your furnace heats the walls and attic, some of these queens become active. Instead of finding their way back outside, they follow warmth and light into your living space. That is why winter wasps tend to show up:

  • On sunny windows and around window frames
  • Near ceiling light fixtures and recessed lights
  • In upstairs rooms and bedrooms under the attic
  • Near attic hatches, bathroom fans and closets

These wasps are usually slow, groggy and alone. They are not building a nest inside your home, and they rarely survive long indoors because the air is too dry and there is no food.

Late-Season Colonies in Walls or Attics

In early fall, before hard frosts, wasps inside can be a sign of an active colony in a wall or attic. Yellowjackets and European hornets sometimes find a route from their nest into the house through gaps around light fixtures, outlets, vents or attic access. If you see several wasps a day, or they are fast and active rather than sluggish, there may be a nest nearby. See yellowjackets in walls and wasps in your attic or soffit.

Wasps Drawn to Lights at Night

European hornets fly at night and are attracted to lights. In late summer and fall, they can slip in through an open door or a torn screen in the evening. See European hornets in Ohio and Indiana.

Lone Wasp or Active Nest? How to Tell

  • Probably overwintering queens: One or two slow wasps at a time, mostly in winter or on warm days in late fall or early spring, often near windows and lights.
  • Possibly an active nest: Several wasps a day in late summer or early fall, active and fast-flying, coming from the same light fixture, vent or wall area, sometimes with buzzing or rustling in the wall or ceiling.

What to Do With a Wasp Inside

  • Stay calm. A sluggish winter wasp is unlikely to sting unless you touch it or step on it.
  • Trap and release or remove it. Cover it with a cup, slide paper underneath and take it outside, or dispose of it.
  • Wear shoes and check bedding and towels if you have seen several.
  • Do not use foggers or bug bombs. They put pesticide throughout your home and will not reach wasps in the walls.

How to Keep Wasps Out Next Winter

  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, siding and trim in late fall or winter, after colonies are gone.
  • Repair window and door screens.
  • Screen attic and gable vents with fine mesh.
  • Seal gaps around ceiling light fixtures, bathroom fans and attic hatches from the inside.

We will help you figure out whether you have an active nest and handle it with our pesticide-free approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are winter wasps building a nest in my house?

Almost never. Overwintering queens wait for spring and then build outdoors or in sheltered parts of the structure.

Could the insects be bees?

Honeybees in a wall stay active all winter and may come inside on warm days. If the insects are fuzzy and golden-brown, see honeybees in walls.
