How Honeybees in Winter Survive Ohio’s Cold: Inside the Winter Cluster

/in /by

One of the biggest surprises for homeowners is learning that honeybees in winter are still very much alive. Wasps and bumblebees die off in fall, leaving only lone queens to start over in spring. A honeybee colony is different. The queen and thousands of workers stay together through the coldest Ohio months. As beekeepers, we spend our winters looking after our own colonies at Apiary #1 in Loudon Township, so here is a plain-language look at how they do it.

Honeybees in Winter Do Not Hibernate

Many insects go dormant in the cold. Honeybees do something different: they form a tight ball called a winter cluster and make their own heat. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension explains that honeybees begin to cluster whenever temperatures get down to about 55°F, gathering on the brood nest and around the queen (UA Cooperative Extension). Bees generate heat by vibrating their wing muscles, similar to the way our muscles shiver when we are cold, while resting bees on the outside form an insulating layer that keeps warmth trapped inside.

Inside the Winter Cluster

  • The core stays warm. When brood (developing young) is present, the brood area is held at roughly 92 to 95°F, according to extension specialists at the University of Arkansas and the University of Florida (UF/IFAS IN1006).
  • The outer shell insulates. Bees on the surface pack together and rest, holding heat in.
  • Bees take turns. University of Arkansas extension describes bees in the center eventually making their way out to rest while others move in.
  • The cluster moves with the food. UF/IFAS notes that the cluster gradually moves up through the colony as a unit, eating through stored honey as it goes.

Honey Is Winter Fuel

All that heat costs energy, and the fuel is honey. University of Arkansas extension explains that bees generate heat from the food they eat. Resting bees fill their honey crop from capped cells, a bit like topping off a fuel tank, and share that honey with other bees in the cluster. A colony that runs out of reachable honey during a long cold stretch can starve.

That is why beekeepers think about winter all year. In late summer and fall, the goal at the apiary is a strong colony with plenty of stored honey heading into the cold months.

Honeybees in winter on the snowy landing board of a white beehive on a sunny, cold day
On a mild, sunny day, honeybees in winter may fly briefly from the hive.

Why You Might See Bees on a Warm Winter Day

On sunny winter days, you may see bees flying near a hive or near a wall where a colony lives. University of Arkansas extension notes that warm days above about 55°F encourage bees to take cleansing flights and carry dead bees out of the hive. Seeing a few honeybees in winter is normal. It is a sign the colony is alive.

Is the Queen Still Laying?

Not much. University of Arkansas extension explains that in fall, as flowers become scarce, the queen slows down her egg production, so there is little to no brood as winter approaches and the colony can turn the heat down a little.

How Beekeepers Help Colonies Through Winter

Our job in winter is mostly to stay out of the way and make sure the bees have what they need. Extension specialists point to a few basics:

  • Shelter without stuffiness. UF/IFAS notes that hives must be sheltered from the wind but still have enough air flow to keep moisture from building up inside, and that early-morning sun helps warm hives during the day.
  • Top insulation with ventilation. In places that regularly freeze, UF/IFAS suggests a top-insulation system to slow heat loss as the cluster moves up, while keeping adequate ventilation.
  • Emergency food. University of Arkansas extension describes candy boards, blocks of sugar candy placed on top of the hive, so the cluster can reach food wherever it is.
  • Watch the weather. The same source notes that a winter with many warm days makes bees burn through their food faster.

What This Means for a Colony in Your Wall

If honeybees moved into your wall, soffit or chimney this year, they did not die when the weather turned. The colony is clustered on its comb inside the structure, living on the honey it stored. A few things follow from that:

  • They will not leave on their own over the winter. A colony with comb and honey is settled in.
  • Sealing the entrance is a bad idea. If the colony dies inside, the comb and honey left behind can cause new problems. See honeybees in your walls.
  • Spraying is never the answer. Honeybees are always relocated by our team, never exterminated. Read why beekeepers never exterminate honeybees.

Relocations from structures are being scheduled for Spring 2027, so winter is a good time to get on the list. Our humane honeybee removal and relocation service is run by working beekeepers, and rescued colonies go to our sister company, The Mindful Beekeeper, where they pass through an inspection station before joining the apiary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do honeybees sleep all winter?

No. Honeybees in winter stay active inside the cluster, generating heat and eating stored honey.

Do bees freeze or starve in winter?

University of Arkansas extension explains that bees make heat from the food they eat, so a colony that runs out of honey it can reach is in serious trouble. Plenty of stores within reach of the cluster is what gets a colony through.

Why is there a hum in my wall in January?

A living honeybee colony inside the wall makes that sound. Call us before you open anything up.

Swarm of Bees or Wasps? What’s Hanging From Your Tree

/in /by

Something is hanging from the tree in your yard, and from the patio you can’t tell what it is. Is it a swarm of bees or wasps? Up close the difference is obvious, but you don’t want to get that close to the wrong one. Here’s how to tell a honeybee swarm from a paper wasp or hornet nest, and what to do about each.

Swarm of Bees or Wasps: Quick ID

Honeybee swarm

  • Made of bees. A swarm is a cluster of living honeybees. The surface moves and shimmers.
  • Appears suddenly. It wasn’t there yesterday. UGA Extension says swarms temporarily cluster on an object such as a branch while scouts look for a permanent home, and usually move on within about 24 hours (UGA Extension C824).
  • Often basketball-sized or smaller, and often in spring and early summer.
  • Usually gentle. MAAREC notes swarming bees are generally gentle because they’re full of honey (MAAREC Publication 3.6).
Large gray paper hornet nest hanging among leafy tree branches, compared in a swarm of bees or wasps ID guide
A hornet nest is a gray paper structure with a smooth, layered surface.

Hornet or wasp nest

  • Made of paper. Bald-faced hornets build a gray paper nest with a smooth, layered surface and a single entrance hole. Wasps fly in and out of that hole.
  • Grows over weeks. A nest gets bigger through the summer. Often people only notice it when leaves fall.
  • Can be hidden. OSU warns that bald-faced hornet nests may be hidden in foliage, which is a risk for anyone trimming (OSU Buckeye Yard and Garden onLine).
  • Defended. OSU notes these wasps are seldom aggressive away from the nest, but they defend it.

See bald-faced hornet nest removal, aerial yellowjacket nests in trees and identify a wasp nest by shape.

Side-by-side checklist

  • Texture: moving bees (swarm) vs. smooth gray paper (nest).
  • Timing: showed up today (swarm) vs. grew over weeks (nest).
  • Traffic: bees landing and taking off all over the cluster (swarm) vs. wasps using one hole (nest).
  • Shape: a loose, drooping clump that may shift (swarm) vs. a firm, enclosed structure (nest).

What to Do Next

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the swarm leave if I wait?

Usually, yes. But if scouts choose your wall, it becomes a colony. See will bees leave on their own?

Could it be bumblebees?

Bumblebees don’t swarm like this. Their nests are usually in the ground. See bumblebee nest in the ground.

Can you tell from a photo?

Usually. Text us a photo from a safe distance.

Bees in a Brick Wall: Honeybee Colonies in Older Brick and Stone Homes

/in /by

Many homes and farm buildings across our area are brick or stone, some of them well over a century old. When you find bees in a brick wall, they’re usually using a worn mortar joint or a gap around a window or vent as the doorway to a cavity behind. Here’s why older masonry can host a colony for years, why you shouldn’t seal it, and how we plan a removal.

Why Bees in a Brick Wall Can Stay for Years

Honeybees look for a dry, enclosed cavity with a small entrance. Research on nest-site selection found swarms prefer a cavity of roughly 40 liters with a small entrance near the bottom, and that they favor cavities used before (Seeley and Morse, 1978). An old wall with voids between the brick and the interior can offer that. UGA Extension notes bees can live in a structure indefinitely, and a cavity that once held bees attracts new swarms (UGA Extension C824). In other words, an old wall can be reused colony after colony.

Signs to Look For

  • Bees flying in and out of one mortar joint or gap, day after day.
  • A hum behind interior plaster or drywall on warm afternoons.
  • Stains or a sticky spot on the inside of the wall. See can bees damage your house?
Honeybees at a crumbling mortar gap between old bricks, the entrance of bees in a brick wall
A worn mortar joint can lead to a cavity behind the brick.

Why Not to Patch the Mortar First

It’s tempting to repoint the joint and be done. But sealing traps the colony inside, and the bees may look for another way out, sometimes into the house. MAAREC warns that comb and honey left in a wall attract pests and can soak in and stain (MAAREC Publication 3.6). UF/IFAS calls complete comb removal essential (UF/IFAS IN771).

How a Masonry Removal Is Planned

Every brick or stone wall is built differently, so there’s no one method. We start with photos and a thermal camera scan to find where the warm comb sits. Then we talk through how to reach it, which might be from the inside wall rather than through the masonry, and what repair will look like afterward. On a September 2025 job at an 1800s church in Rudolph, the thermal camera located the colony in two wall channels beneath a window (The Mindful Beekeeper).

Once the comb is out and the cavity is cleaned, the gap can be properly sealed. See bees came back after removal?

Bees in the House: How Honeybees Get Indoors and What to Do

/in /by

Finding bees in the house is unsettling, but what it means depends on how many you see and where. One or two honeybees at a window usually wandered in by accident. A few new bees every day near the same light fixture, outlet or vent is a different story. That pattern often points to a colony living in the wall or ceiling right next to you.

Bees in the House: What the Pattern Tells You

A few bees at a window

Bees that get indoors fly toward the light. WSU Extension notes that bees trapped indoors fly to windows trying to escape (WSU Extension). A bee or two that came in through an open door is no cause for alarm.

New bees every day near a fixture or vent

If bees keep appearing near a ceiling light, a recessed can, an outlet, a fan or an attic hatch, they may be coming from a colony in the cavity behind it. Gaps around fixtures give them a path into the room, and the light draws them out. Look outside for bees flying in and out of a gap in the siding, soffit or chimney on the same side of the house. See honeybees in walls and bees in your chimney.

Two honeybees on a ceiling beside a recessed light, a common sign of bees in the house coming from a colony above
Bees showing up near a ceiling light, day after day, can mean a colony in the ceiling or wall.

Bees indoors after the entrance was sealed

Sealing the outside entrance traps the colony. The bees may look for another way out, sometimes into the house. That’s one of the main reasons we ask people not to seal or spray before removal.

How Bees Get Indoors in the First Place

The colony itself is usually outside the living space, inside a wall, ceiling or chimney. UGA Extension notes that bees flying back and forth from a gap in the walls of a house is a sign a colony has set up inside the hollow, and it advises caulking likely entry points such as knotholes, siding gaps and openings around plumbing and wires. The same kinds of gaps on the inside, around fixtures, vents and trim, are how a few bees end up in a room.

What to Do Right Now

  • Catch and release a stray. WSU suggests trapping a bee in a glass or jar against the window, sliding a card underneath, and releasing it outdoors.
  • Close off the room if bees keep appearing from one fixture, and keep pets out.
  • Don’t remove the fixture or spray into the gap. Note where they’re coming from.
  • Look for stains on the ceiling or wall nearby. See can bees damage your house?

Frequently Asked Questions

Are they honeybees or wasps?

In fall and winter, wasps indoors are common too. See wasps inside your house and honeybee vs. yellowjacket.

Why are bees showing up in winter?

A colony in a warm wall stays active through winter, clustered around the queen. On mild days, or near a warm fixture, some bees may wander toward the light. A steady trickle in winter is a strong sign of a colony.

Africanized ‘Killer Bees’: Are There Africanized Bees in Ohio?

/in /by

The phrase “killer bees” sticks with people, and every so often we get a call from someone worried a defensive colony means Africanized bees. So are there Africanized bees in Ohio? Based on the USDA range data we can point to, Ohio has not been on the list. Here’s what that data actually says, how old it is, and why a defensive colony in Ohio is usually a different story.

Africanized Bees in Ohio: What the USDA Data Says

In 2007, the USDA Agricultural Research Service published an updated map of Africanized honeybee spread. As of that update, Africanized bees had been found in nine states. According to USDA’s AgResearch magazine, they spread into Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California and Nevada, in that order, between October 1990 and 2005, and then into Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana after fall 2005. Ohio was not among them.

ARS noted that some finds, such as those in South Florida, were not connected to the main spread and were most likely due to human-assisted transport. That’s a reminder that range maps describe where bees have been confirmed as of a date, not a permanent boundary. For the current picture, check with USDA or the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Why Climate Matters

The same AgResearch article notes that European honeybees are better adapted to temperate climates, while African honeybees are more suited to the tropics. Ohio winters are long and cold.

The name itself reflects that question. AgResearch explains that “Africanized honey bee” came about because it was long believed African bees would hybridize with European honeybees already in the wild, especially in temperate areas, where African bees were expected to lose their tropical advantages.

Illustrative image. USDA researchers note European honeybees are better adapted to temperate climates.

You Can’t Tell by Looking

The UC Davis California Master Beekeeper Program says Africanized genetics can only be confirmed by lab analysis. UF/IFAS makes the same point: Africanized and European bees can’t be told apart without lab testing (UF/IFAS IN771). The California program also prefers the term “defensive honey bees” for colonies that behave aggressively.

So Why Is This Colony So Defensive?

The California program lists genetics, colony health, weather and season, scents, dark clothing, movement and vibration as factors. Colonies tend to be more defensive in fall. USDA ARS warns that mowers, trimmers and other equipment alarm bees (USDA ARS). See can bees smell fear?

Whatever the cause, keep people and pets away, don’t spray or seal the entrance, and call a beekeeper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it honeybees at all?

Inside a Wild Honeybee Nest: Comb, Brood and Honey Explained

/in /by

When we open a wall or a hollow tree, the first thing people see is a mass of bees. Under them is a whole structure. A wild honeybee nest is built from sheets of wax comb, and each part of that comb has a job: raising young bees, storing pollen, or holding honey. Here’s a beekeeper’s tour of what’s inside and how each part is handled during a rescue.

The Comb: How a Wild Honeybee Nest Is Built

Worker bees make beeswax from glands on their bodies. MAAREC Publication 3.9 explains that the wax scales are molded into a hexagonal pattern, with six-sided cells facing opposite directions from a central midrib. New wax is white and darkens over time from pollen and traffic. In a wall or tree, bees hang several sheets of comb side by side, with just enough space between them for bees to work.

Brood: The Next Generation

Brood means eggs, larvae and pupae. MAAREC notes that larvae hatch from eggs in about 3 days, and a queen in peak season may lay up to 1,500 eggs a day. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension notes workers feed the young and cap the cells of mature larvae for pupation. Capped brood looks like tan, slightly domed cells. Open brood shows white, curled larvae.

Young larvae in open cells and capped brood next to them. Brood comb is what keeps a rescued colony going.

Pollen and Honey

  • Pollen is the colony’s protein. The University of Arkansas notes egg-laying begins in early spring when the first fresh pollen comes in, and continues as long as pollen is available. Stored pollen shows up as cells packed with yellow, orange or brown.
  • Honey is made from nectar the workers collect, and it’s sealed under pale wax cappings. UF/IFAS says a northern colony needs about 90 pounds of honey to get through winter (UF/IFAS IN1006).

How Each Part Is Handled in a Rescue

  • Brood comb is the priority. We cut it out carefully and secure it into frames so the colony keeps raising its young.
  • Honey comb comes out too. Left behind, MAAREC warns it attracts pests and can soak into and stain walls (MAAREC Publication 3.6).
  • The queen needs to come along. Without her, a colony can’t carry on normally.
  • Leftover wax is cleaned off so the cavity doesn’t attract the next swarm.

On our Fostoria grain bin job in July 2025 there were seven layers of comb and more than 20,000 bees relocated alive (The Mindful Beekeeper).

Bees Came Back After Removal? Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

/in /by

The colony is gone, the wall is patched, and then a few weeks or a year later, bees are back at the same spot. If your bees came back after removal, you’re not alone, and it usually has a clear cause. Either something was left behind, or the cavity is still open and still attractive to swarms. Here’s why it happens and how to stop it.

Why Bees Came Back After Removal

1. Stragglers the next day

A few bees hovering the morning after isn’t a return. UGA Extension notes stray workers may be around after a removal and are usually gone within a day (UGA Extension C824). UF/IFAS notes a swarm trap or sticky trap can be left for up to a month to catch stragglers and returning bees (UF/IFAS Extension IN771).

2. Comb or honey left in the wall

UF/IFAS calls complete comb removal essential. MAAREC says leftover honey and comb attract other insects and animals (MAAREC Publication 3.6). If a previous company sprayed but left the comb, that’s often the source of the problem.

3. A cavity that bees like

Research on nest-site choice found that swarms prefer cavities that were used before (Seeley and Morse, 1978). UGA says the same thing: cavities that housed bees attract new swarms.

Hand sealing a gap around a pipe on siding with a caulk gun, a simple fix when bees came back after removal
Sealing gaps around pipes and wires, after the comb is gone, helps keep new swarms out.

How to Prevent It

  • Get all the comb out first. Sealing before the comb is gone traps the problem inside.
  • Clean the cavity. We clean off leftover wax so new swarms aren’t drawn back.
  • Wash the entry. MAAREC recommends washing the entry area with soapy water, then filling the cavity and blocking the entrance.
  • Seal the gaps. UGA advises caulking likely entry sites such as knotholes, gaps in siding and openings around plumbing or electric wires.
  • Watch in swarm season. Spring and early summer is when scouts are out looking. A few bees investigating one spot is the early warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one or two bees at the gap a problem?

Not necessarily. Foragers may visit nearby flowers or water. Bees that keep investigating one particular gap, rather than passing by, may be scouts. If the number climbs, call before a swarm moves in.

When is the best time to seal?

After every piece of comb is out and the cavity is cleaned, and ideally before the next spring swarm season.

Should I spray the spot to keep them away?

Spraying doesn’t remove scent or comb, and it can contaminate bees that would otherwise be rescued. Seal the gap instead.

Could it be wasps this time?

Wasps reuse sheltered spots too. See wasp-proofing your home and after wasp nest removal.

How do I know it’s a new colony?

Steady traffic for more than a day or two means bees are moving in. See will bees leave on their own?

Can Bees Damage Your House? Wax, Honey Leaks and Stains

/in /by

Homeowners ask us can bees damage your house almost as often as they ask whether bees will sting. The short answer: honeybees themselves aren’t wood destroyers. UGA Extension notes that bees don’t cause significant structural damage (UGA Extension C824). The trouble comes from what a colony builds and stores inside the wall: wax comb and honey. Left in place, those can stain walls and ceilings, attract pests and draw new swarms.

Can Bees Damage Your House? Where the Problems Come From

Honey leaks and stains

UGA warns that combs may melt and stain interior walls with honey and wax. MAAREC adds that if honey soaks into walls, the stain can be impossible to paint or wallpaper over and may stay moist to the touch for a long time (MAAREC Publication 3.6). UF/IFAS notes stored honey can drip out near the nest and stain the wall or ceiling (UF/IFAS Extension IN771).

Pests drawn to old comb

MAAREC says honey and beeswax comb left behind will attract other insects and animals, and that comb can be attacked by wax moths. UF/IFAS notes pests feeding on remaining comb can get into the home.

New swarms

UGA notes that cavities that housed bees before tend to attract new swarms. See bees came back after removal?

Exterior wall opened between studs showing insulation in the cavity, where the answer to can bees damage your house becomes clear
An opened wall cavity. Colonies often build comb in spaces like this, between studs.

What It Means During Removal

Because the comb is the problem, it has to come out. UF/IFAS calls complete comb removal essential and notes removers may need to cut into walls. For bees in structures, we use a thermal camera to find the comb, make a careful wall cutout, move the colony comb and all, and clean off leftover wax. Insulation that’s been soaked with honey or packed with comb usually has to be pulled out of that section too.

That’s also why killing bees in a wall makes things worse. UGA explains that if the colony dies, its combs are no longer ventilated by fanning bees, which is how comb ends up melting and leaking. See why beekeepers never exterminate honeybees.

What About Siding, Soffits and Brick?

The outside of the house usually shows less than the inside. Bees use an existing gap, such as a siding seam, a loose soffit panel or a mortar joint, rather than making their own. On a job in Wayne, we cut a 20-by-20-inch comb out from behind siding by hand and secured it into frames (The Mindful Beekeeper). The damage that matters is the opening needed to reach the comb, and what the comb and honey do if they’re left in place. See bees in a soffit and bees in a brick wall.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Dark or amber stains on a wall or ceiling, especially below a known entrance.
  • A sticky or soft spot in drywall.
  • Bees flying in and out of one gap day after day. See honeybees in walls.

How Many Bees in a Hive? What a Wall Colony Really Holds

/in /by

When we open a wall, people are always surprised by the number. So how many bees in a hive? According to MAAREC, a colony is made up of thousands of workers, and as it grows it can reach a maximum of about 60,000 workers. In late spring and summer there’s also a single queen and several hundred drones. A colony in your wall works the same way as one in a beekeeper’s box.

How Many Bees in a Hive, Season by Season

Spring and early summer: growing fast

MAAREC notes that queens lay the most eggs in spring and early summer, up to about 1,500 eggs a day at peak. That’s when colonies grow fastest and when swarms leave to start new colonies.

Summer: peak population

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension notes that workers reared in spring and early summer live about five to six weeks, so the colony is constantly replacing itself. A strong summer colony is at or near its largest.

Fall and winter: fewer bees, more honey

Colonies shrink going into winter. The bees cluster around the queen to keep her warm. UF/IFAS Extension IN1006 says a colony in the North generally needs about 90 pounds of honey reserves to get through winter, because bees can’t forage then.

Honeybee workers crowded together on wax comb, showing how many bees in a hive can cover a single sheet
A single sheet of comb can be covered in thousands of workers in summer.

What That Number Means for Removal

  • More bees means more comb. Workers produce the wax and build the honeycomb, the University of Arkansas notes. A large colony has built a lot of it.
  • More comb means more honey in the wall. MAAREC warns that comb left behind attracts pests and that honey can soak into walls and stain them (MAAREC Publication 3.6).
  • Killing them doesn’t remove any of it. See can bees damage your house?

For scale, our July 2025 grain bin rescue in Fostoria involved seven layers of comb and more than 20,000 bees relocated alive (The Mindful Beekeeper).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all those bees fly out at once?

No. The University of Arkansas notes that a worker spends roughly its first two weeks as a house bee, working inside the hive. Only part of the colony is out foraging at any moment, which is why a busy entrance can still badly understate what’s inside the wall.

What do the drones do?

Drones are males. The University of Arkansas notes they don’t tend brood, make wax or collect pollen or nectar. They’re reared mainly in spring and summer to mate with new queens.

How many bees are in a swarm?

MAAREC says a swarm contains thousands of workers and their queen. See honeybee swarms.

How big is a bumblebee colony?

Much smaller. See bumblebee nest in the ground.

What’s inside the comb?

Bees in a Soffit or Porch Ceiling: What You’ll See and What Happens Next

/in /by

A steady stream of bees going in and out of a corner of your roofline is hard to miss. Bees in a soffit or porch ceiling are usually honeybees that have moved into the dry, sheltered space inside the overhang. MAAREC notes that honeybees nest in sheltered, dark enclosures, including porch roofs and spaces between wall studs (MAAREC Publication 3.6). Here is what you’ll see, what not to do, and how a live removal from an overhang works.

Signs of Bees in a Soffit

  • Same gap, every day. Bees flying in and out of one opening for more than a day or two point to a colony, not a passing swarm. See will bees leave on their own?
  • A hum overhead. On warm afternoons you may hear it through the porch ceiling.
  • Stains or drips. Dark staining, wax or honey seeping from boards is a sign of comb above.
  • Bees near porch lights or indoors. See bees in the house.

Honeybees or Wasps?

Wasps love soffits too. Honeybees are fuzzy and brown to amber, and fly in a steady line. Yellowjackets are smooth, shiny and bright yellow and black. If it’s wasps, see wasps in your attic or soffit and honeybee vs. yellowjacket.

Why Overhangs Attract Colonies

Research on how swarms pick a home found that scouts prefer an enclosed cavity of roughly 40 liters with a small entrance, several meters off the ground (Seeley and Morse, 1978). A boxed-in soffit or the space above a porch ceiling can match that closely. UGA advises caulking likely entry points such as gaps in siding and openings around plumbing or wires, which applies to loose soffit panels and fixture gaps too.

Why You Shouldn’t Seal the Entrance

Sealing the gap traps the colony. The bees may look for another way out, sometimes into the house. Even if the colony dies, UGA warns that comb can melt and stain interior walls with honey and wax (UGA Extension C824). The comb has to come out.

How a Live Cutout From an Overhang Works

  • Find the comb. A thermal camera shows where the warm comb sits in the overhang.
  • Open the soffit or ceiling. We remove panels or boards carefully to reach the colony.
  • Move the colony comb and all. Comb with brood is secured so the colony keeps it.
  • Clean the cavity. Leftover wax is cleaned off so new swarms aren’t drawn back. See bees came back after removal?

The bees go to The Mindful Beekeeper, through an inspection station, and into Apiary #1 in Loudon Township.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can they stay?

UGA suggests a leave-alone approach can work when the entrance is high and far from people and pets, like a roof peak. A porch ceiling over the front door usually isn’t that spot.

Is the porch light part of the problem?

Gaps around a fixture can be an entry point into the ceiling cavity. Don’t remove a fixture with bees behind it yourself. Tell us where it is so we can plan around the wiring.

How do I get ready?

Bees in Your Overhang?

Honeybees are always relocated, never exterminated. Rescued colonies go to The Mindful Beekeeper, pass through an inspection station, and then join Apiary #1 in Loudon Township. Honeybee relocation from walls and other structures is being scheduled for Spring 2027. Call or text 419-614-6445 or use our contact page to tell us what you are seeing, and read about humane honeybee removal and relocation.
