Why Beekeepers Never Exterminate Honeybees

/in /by

When bees show up where you do not want them, the first instinct is often to search for “bee removal near me” and call whoever answers first. But who you call makes a big difference, both for your home and for the bees. Here is why beekeepers never exterminate honeybees, what a beekeeper does instead, and how to find the right help in Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, and Southern Michigan.

Honeybees Are Not Pests

Honeybees are among the most important pollinators in agriculture. Farms, orchards, and home gardens across Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan depend on pollinators for fruits, vegetables, and seed crops. Managed and wild honeybee colonies have faced serious losses from parasites, disease, pesticides, and habitat loss, and beekeepers work hard every year to keep colonies alive.

For a beekeeper, a honeybee colony that has moved into a wall or landed as a swarm is not a pest problem. It is a healthy colony in the wrong place.

What Happens When Honeybees Are Exterminated

Exterminating a honeybee colony, especially one inside a structure, rarely solves the problem:

  • The comb and honey remain. A wall colony can contain a lot of wax and honey. Without living bees to maintain it, honey can melt, leak, and stain walls and ceilings.
  • Secondary pests arrive. Abandoned comb attracts wax moths, small hive beetles, ants, and rodents.
  • Odors develop from dead bees and brood.
  • Future swarms return. Old comb gives off scents that attract new swarms to the same cavity.
  • Contaminated honey. Pesticide-laced honey left in a wall can be carried off by robbing bees from other colonies.
  • A colony is lost that could have been saved.

What Beekeepers Do Instead

A beekeeper’s goal is to remove the bees alive and leave nothing behind that would cause problems later.

For swarms

A swarm clustered on a branch, fence, or eave is collected into a hive box and relocated. Swarms are typically calm because they have no comb or brood to defend. Learn more in our guide to honeybee swarms in Ohio.

For established colonies in structures

A colony living in a wall, ceiling, chimney, or soffit requires a live removal, often called a cut-out. The cavity is opened, the comb with brood is transferred into hive frames, the adult bees are collected, remaining honey and wax are cleaned out, and the colony is moved to an apiary. Our article on honeybees in your walls walks through the process.

For prevention

Beekeepers also help homeowners understand how bees got in and what to seal so a new swarm does not move into the same space.

Why Live Removal Is Better for Your Home, Too

Saving the bees is not just the kind choice. It is also the more complete solution for your property. When a beekeeper removes a colony alive, the comb, honey, and brood leave with the bees. There is no honey left to melt through the drywall in July, no wax to draw in moths and beetles, and far less scent left behind to lure in the next swarm. Many homeowners who first called because they were worried about the bees end up relieved that the removal also protected their walls and ceilings.

It is also safer. Beekeepers work with honeybees every day and understand how to keep a colony calm while it is being moved. That reduces the chances of bees ending up inside your living space during the job.

A Beekeeper-Owned Company

Northwest Ohio Wasp Removal and our sister company, The Mindful Beekeeper, are both owned by a beekeeper. That shapes everything we do:

  • Honeybees, bumblebees, and native paper wasps are always humanely relocated, never exterminated.
  • Our methods are pesticide-free. Nothing is sprayed in your home.
  • We confirm the species first. Not every “bee” is a bee. If it turns out to be yellowjackets, the colony and nest are physically removed without pesticides.

For honeybee-specific removals, The Mindful Beekeeper specializes in humane honeybee rescue and relocation from structures and voids. Visit themindfulbeekeeper.com to see examples of live removals.

Bee Removal Near Me: How to Choose the Right Help

When you are comparing options, ask a few questions:

  • Are you a beekeeper? Beekeepers understand colony behavior and have somewhere to put the bees.
  • Will you remove the bees alive? The answer should be yes for honeybees.
  • Will you remove the comb and honey? Removing only the bees, or only spraying, leaves the biggest problems behind.
  • Do you use pesticides? For honeybees, the answer should be no.
  • What happens to the bees afterward? A good answer includes a hive and an apiary.

Is It Really Honeybees?

Before you call anyone, a quick check can help:

  • Honeybees: Fuzzy, golden-brown, steady flight, active on warm days even in early spring and late fall.
  • Bumblebees: Large, round, very fuzzy, small colonies, often in the ground or under decks.
  • Yellowjackets: Smooth, shiny, bright yellow and black, fast, attracted to food and trash.

Our identification guide has photos and descriptions to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t an exterminator just spray the bees?

Spraying may kill the bees, but it leaves the comb, honey, and dead bees inside your structure, which often leads to leaks, odors, pests, and new swarms. A live removal by a beekeeper solves the problem and saves the colony.

What happens to the bees after removal?

They are placed in a hive and relocated to an apiary where they can continue living and pollinating.

Do you remove bumblebees too?

Yes, and they are always relocated. See our guide to bumblebee nests.

Where do you provide bee removal?

We serve Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, and Southern Michigan.

Honeybees in Your Walls: Live Bee Removal Without Extermination

/in /by

Bees going in and out of a crack in your siding, a soffit, a chimney, or a gap around a window can mean a honeybee colony has moved into your home. Unlike wasps, honeybees do not leave on their own when the weather turns cold, and simply killing them creates new problems. This guide explains how live bee hive removal works, why extermination is the wrong answer, and what to expect when honeybees are removed from a wall in Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, or Southern Michigan.

How Honeybees End Up in Your Walls

Most wall colonies start as a swarm. In spring and early summer, a honeybee colony divides and a large group of bees leaves with the old queen to find a new home. Scout bees search for a dry, protected cavity, and a wall void, ceiling, soffit, or chimney is a close match for the hollow trees honeybees use in nature. Read more about how this happens in our article on honeybee swarms in Ohio.

Once inside, the bees immediately begin building sheets of beeswax comb. They raise brood, store pollen, and fill the comb with honey. Over time, a colony can grow into a large, heavy structure inside your wall.

Signs of Honeybees in Your Walls

Sheets of honeybee comb covered in bees inside an opened wall

  • Steady bee traffic in and out of a small opening, often in the same spot day after day
  • Fuzzy, golden-brown bees returning with pollen on their legs
  • Activity on warm days in early spring or late fall, when wasp colonies are not active
  • A humming sound inside the wall
  • Stains, a sweet smell, or honey seeping through drywall or ceilings in long-established colonies
  • Bees indoors, especially near windows and light fixtures

If the insects are smooth and shiny and the activity disappears after the first hard frosts, you may be dealing with yellowjackets instead. Our article on yellowjackets in your walls covers those signs.

Why Exterminating Honeybees in a Wall Is a Bad Idea

Spraying a honeybee colony inside a structure may kill the bees, but it leaves everything else behind:

  • Honey and comb stay in the wall. Without bees to regulate temperature and guard it, wax can soften and honey can leak, ferment, and stain walls and ceilings.
  • Pests move in. Abandoned comb and honey attract wax moths, small hive beetles, ants, rodents, and other insects.
  • Odors develop from thousands of dead bees and rotting brood.
  • New swarms return. The scent of old comb can attract future swarms to the same cavity.
  • Pollinators are lost. A healthy colony of honeybees is destroyed when it could have been saved.

That is why honeybees are always relocated alive by our team, never exterminated. Our article on why beekeepers never exterminate honeybees goes deeper.

How Live Bee Hive Removal Works

A live honeybee removal from a structure is often called a “cut-out.” Every building is different, but the process typically includes:

  1. Locating the colony. The entrance is not always directly beside the comb. Tools like thermal cameras can help pinpoint where the colony sits inside a wall or ceiling.
  2. Opening the cavity. Siding, trim, drywall, brick, or ceiling material is carefully opened to expose the comb.
  3. Removing the comb and bees. Comb with brood is transferred into frames in a hive box so the colony keeps its developing bees. The adult bees, ideally including the queen, are collected along with it.
  4. Cleaning out the cavity. Remaining honey and wax are removed so they do not attract pests or future swarms.
  5. Relocating the colony. The bees are moved to an apiary where they can continue to live and pollinate.

Our methods are pesticide-free, and because the bees, comb, and honey are all removed, nothing is left behind to rot.

After the Removal

Once the bees, comb, and honey are out, the cavity should be cleaned and closed up so it does not attract the next swarm. Old comb and honey residue give off scents that scout bees can detect, so a thorough cleanout matters. Sealing the original entrance and any other gaps in the area, once the bees are gone, is the best way to keep a new colony from moving into the same space next spring.

What You Should Do Right Now

  • Do not seal the entrance. Trapped bees may find their way into your living space, and sealing does not remove the comb.
  • Do not spray. Pesticides can contaminate honey and comb and turn a live removal into a messy cleanup.
  • Note what you see: where the bees enter, how long they have been there, and whether you have noticed staining or bees indoors.
  • Call a beekeeper who performs live structural removals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will honeybees leave my wall on their own?

Rarely. Honeybee colonies are perennial. They cluster through the winter and can live in the same wall for years, growing larger each season.

Do you have to open the wall?

In most cases, yes. The comb, honey, and brood must be physically removed for the job to be complete. Access is planned to minimize disruption.

Is bee hive removal different from wasp nest removal?

Very different. Wasp nests are paper and the colonies die off in winter. Honeybee colonies are wax, store honey, and live year-round, so they require a live removal and relocation.

Where do you provide live bee hive removal?

We serve Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, and Southern Michigan.

Honeybee Swarms in Ohio: Why They Happen and Who to Call

/in /by

It can be startling: one minute your yard is quiet, and the next, thousands of bees are swirling through the air and settling into a buzzing cluster on a tree branch, fence post, or the side of your house. That is a honeybee swarm, and while it looks dramatic, it is one of the most natural and gentle events in the insect world. This guide explains why swarms happen, what to do and not do, and who to call for humane bee removal in Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, and Southern Michigan.

What Is a Honeybee Swarm?

A swarm is how a honeybee colony reproduces. When a colony becomes crowded and healthy enough to divide, the workers raise new queens. Before the new queens emerge, the old queen leaves with a large portion of the worker bees to find a new home. The original colony stays behind with a new queen.

The departing bees fly out in a dramatic cloud, then gather into a tight cluster around their queen, often on a branch, shrub, fence, mailbox, or eave. That cluster is a temporary resting spot, not a nest.

Why Swarms Happen in Ohio

In our region, swarm season is mainly spring into early summer, with the most activity in late spring when colonies are growing fast and nectar is flowing. Swarms can happen later in summer too, but they are less common. Common triggers include:

  • Crowding: The colony has run out of room for brood and honey.
  • A strong, growing population during spring buildup
  • Good weather on warm, calm, sunny days, when most swarms take flight
  • Natural instinct: Reproducing by swarming is how honeybee colonies multiply in the wild.

Are Honeybee Swarms Dangerous?

Swarms are usually the calmest honeybees you will ever see. Before leaving, the bees fill up on honey to carry with them, and they have no comb, brood, or stored food to defend. That is why beekeepers can often collect a swarm with very little protective gear.

That said, they are still bees. Give them space, keep children and pets back, and never spray, swat, or throw things at a swarm.

What Happens Next if You Leave It Alone

While the cluster rests, scout bees search for a permanent home: a hollow tree, a cavity in a wall, a soffit, a chimney, or an empty box. The swarm may stay a few hours or a few days. Once scouts agree on a site, the entire cluster lifts off and moves in.

Here is the problem: that “new home” is often inside a house, barn, or shed. Once honeybees move into a wall, they begin building wax comb and storing honey right away, and the job becomes a much bigger structural removal. Our article on honeybees in your walls explains what that involves. Calling early, while bees are still clustered outside, is the easiest outcome for everyone, including the bees.

What to Do if You Find a Swarm

  1. Stay calm and keep your distance. Keep kids and pets indoors or well away.
  2. Do not spray it with water, insecticide, or anything else.
  3. Take a photo from a safe distance and note how high the cluster is and what it is attached to.
  4. Call a beekeeper as soon as possible. Swarms can move on quickly, so the sooner the better.

Who to Call for Bee Removal When a Swarm Arrives

Do not call an exterminator for a honeybee swarm. Honeybees are vital pollinators for Ohio agriculture and gardens, and a swarm is a healthy colony looking for a home. It deserves to be rescued, not killed.

Honeybees are always relocated, never exterminated. A collected swarm is placed in a hive box and given a new home in a managed apiary where it can thrive.

Is It Really Honeybees?

Swarms are a honeybee behavior, but people sometimes mistake other insects for swarms:

  • Honeybee swarm: A dense, hanging cluster of fuzzy, golden-brown bees, often football-sized or larger, out in the open.
  • Yellowjackets or hornets: Smooth, shiny, bright yellow and black or black and white wasps, coming and going from a paper nest or a hole, not clustered in the open.
  • Bumblebees: Large, fuzzy bees that do not swarm. You may see them coming and going from a ground or deck nest. See our guide to bumblebee nests.

Our identification guide has more help telling them apart.

Preventing Swarms From Moving Into Your Home

  • Seal gaps in siding, soffits, and around chimneys and vents in the off-season.
  • Cap or screen unused chimneys and vent openings.
  • Remove or close up empty boxes, old hive equipment, and hollow items stored outdoors.
  • If you see scout bees investigating a gap in spring, call before a swarm arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a honeybee swarm stay in my tree?

Anywhere from a few hours to a few days. It depends on how quickly scout bees find a new home, so it is best to call a beekeeper right away.

Will a swarm sting me?

Swarms are generally very docile because they have no nest to defend. Still, keep your distance and do not disturb them.

Should I spray a swarm with water to make it leave?

No. Spraying can agitate the bees and may push them into your house or another structure. Let a beekeeper collect them.

Where do you provide bee removal for swarms?

We serve Northwest Ohio, East Indiana, and Southern Michigan.
