Yellowjackets in Fall: The Porch Decor and Treats That Draw Them In

/in /by

Fall porches in Northwest Ohio look great: a straw bale, a bundle of corn stalks, mums and a row of pumpkins. Then the uninvited guests show up. Yellowjackets in fall behave differently than they do in June, and some of our favorite seasonal traditions put the things they want most right at the front door. Here is what is going on and how to keep the porch pleasant through Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Why Yellowjackets in Fall Want Sugar

For most of the summer, yellowjacket workers hunt insects and meat to feed the larvae back at the nest. Late in the season that changes. Ohio State University Extension explains that in late summer, from about August through October, yellowjacket food preferences change from proteins to sweets, and the wasps become persistent, unwelcome guests at picnics and outdoor events (OSU Extension, HYG-2075).

OSU’s yard and garden team adds that once a colony starts raising new queens and males, those “freeloaders” need sweets, so workers go searching for foods that provide an energy boost such as soda, donuts and funnel cakes (OSU BYGL). Colonies are also at their biggest at this time of year, so there are a lot of foragers out looking.

Fall Decor and Treats That Draw Yellowjackets

Carved and Softening Pumpkins

OSU lists fruit among the things that attract large numbers of yellowjackets, and a pumpkin is a fruit. A whole, uncut pumpkin keeps its sugar sealed inside. Once it is carved, or once it cracks or goes soft on the bottom, the exposed flesh becomes an easy sugar source sitting right next to your door.

Cider, Caramel Apples and Candy

Fall gatherings on the porch usually mean cider, caramel apples and bowls of candy. OSU Extension specifically names sweet beverages and fruit drinks, and recommends keeping drinks in covered cups or containers with lids. It also suggests checking open cans before you sip, since a wasp may have crawled inside looking for sugar.

Trash Cans by the Door

Party trash full of cups and wrappers often ends up by the porch or garage. OSU’s entomologists say the most effective way to manage yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets at outdoor gatherings is to stay diligent with trash collection, and they describe an overflowing trash can as a flashing neon “eat here” sign.

Front porch with a hay bale, corn stalks, mums, pumpkins and a cup of cider, a setup that can attract yellowjackets in fall
Dry decor is not food. Cider, treats and soft pumpkins are what pull yellowjackets in fall to the door.

What About Hay Bales and Corn Stalks?

Straw bales and dried corn stalks are not food, so they are not what draws yellowjackets in. The bigger concern is where decor sits. OSU notes that yellowjacket nests are typically built in protected cavities such as animal burrows and thick mulch piles. Watch for wasps flying in and out of one spot before you set a bale on the lawn or tuck decor into a landscape bed, and do not stack anything over an active hole.

Simple Ways to Keep Fall Decor Sting-Free

  • Use uncarved pumpkins and gourds near the door, and move carved jack-o’-lanterns to the compost pile soon after Halloween.
  • Toss pumpkins as soon as they soften or start to leak.
  • Serve drinks with lids, and keep candy bowls covered between trick-or-treaters.
  • Keep trash cans closed and away from entrances, and rinse sticky spills off the porch.
  • Go light on scents. OSU notes that flowery clothing and perfume can attract yellowjackets.
  • Watch where kids sit and play. Our guide to keeping kids and pets safe around wasp and bee nests has more tips.

When the Problem Is a Nest, Not the Decor

A handful of yellowjackets on a pumpkin is a nuisance. A steady stream of them flying to the same spot every day usually means there is a nest close by: in the ground near the steps, behind siding, under the porch or in a soffit. Removing the food helps, but it will not move a nest. If you are seeing that steady traffic, our article on yellowjacket ground nests explains what you are likely dealing with, and our wasp and hornet nest removal service can take care of it.

Our service is pesticide-free. Yellowjacket nests are physically removed, and if the insects turn out to be honeybees, bumblebees or native paper wasps, they are relocated instead.

Hosting a Fall Party Outdoors

Bonfires, hayrides and Halloween parties keep people outside well into the season. A little planning keeps yellowjackets from crashing them:

  • Set the food table away from the door and away from trash cans, so foragers that find one do not end up at the other.
  • Put out food just before serving and cover it again as soon as people are done.
  • Give each guest a lidded cup or a marked bottle, so nobody picks up a drink that sat open.
  • Empty and close trash bags often during the event, not just at the end. OSU’s advice to stay diligent with trash collection matters most at gatherings.
  • Walk the yard beforehand. If you see a steady line of wasps going into one hole or gap, keep guests away from it and give us a call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do yellowjackets go away after the first frost?

OSU Extension explains that the workers, males and old queen die at the onset of cold temperatures, and only new queens overwinter. Until it gets truly cold, though, foragers stay active on mild afternoons.

Are those bees on my pumpkin, or yellowjackets?

OSU notes that yellowjacket workers are often confused with honeybees, but honeybees are covered with dense hair, while yellowjackets are shiny and mostly hairless with bright yellow and black markings. Our guide to identifying wasps, bees and hornets can help.

Will a wasp trap on the porch fix the problem?

Traps catch foragers but do not remove the nest. Read more in fake nests, traps and peppermint oil.

Late-Season Wasp Nest: Remove It Now or Let the Freeze Finish It?

/in /by

When the leaves come down, a lot of people finally notice the big gray nest in the maple or the steady line of yellowjackets going into the lawn. The question we hear most in October and November is simple: is a late-season wasp nest still worth removing, or will winter take care of it? The honest answer is that it depends on where the nest is and who is around it. This guide walks through how the end of the wasp season works and how to decide.

What Happens to a Late-Season Wasp Nest

Yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets and paper wasps all live in annual colonies in Ohio. Ohio State University Extension explains that the workers, the males and the old queen die once cold temperatures arrive. Only newly mated queens survive the winter, and they shelter for the winter in protected places such as hollow logs, under loose bark and in soil cavities (OSU Extension, Yellowjackets HYG-2075).

OSU entomologists also point out that wasp nests are never used for more than one season in Ohio (OSU Buckeye Yard & Garden onLine). Once the colony dies, that nest is finished. Our article on wasp nests in winter covers the empty-nest side of the story.

The catch is timing. A colony does not shut down on a set date. Workers keep flying on mild afternoons, and the nest stays defended until the cold actually kills the colony. Late-season colonies are also at their largest. OSU notes that yellowjacket nests quickly reach about 4,000 to 5,000 workers by August and late September.

Why Fall Wasps Feel More Aggressive

In late summer and fall, yellowjackets switch from hunting protein to looking for sugar. OSU Extension describes them as persistent, unwelcome guests at picnics and outdoor events from August through October, drawn to garbage cans, sweet drinks and fruit. That is when many people get stung, and it is why fall nests feel like a bigger problem than spring ones. We explain the behavior in why wasps get aggressive in late summer and fall.

Frost on the lawn around a late-season wasp nest entrance in the ground, with a few sluggish yellowjackets at the hole
Cold mornings slow yellowjackets down, but a ground nest stays defended until a hard freeze.

When the Nest Should Still Come Out

Waiting for a freeze is reasonable for some nests. For others it is a gamble with somebody’s safety. We recommend removal now when:

  • The nest is next to a door, walkway, deck or play area. A few more weeks of daily traffic past an active nest is a few more weeks of sting risk.
  • Someone in the home is allergic to stings or has had a strong reaction before. OSU’s yard and garden team puts it bluntly: a mass attack is not a good time to learn whether you are allergic to wasp venom.
  • The nest is inside a wall, soffit or attic. OSU Extension notes that yellowjackets often build nests in attic and wall voids, and a nest you cannot see is hard to keep people away from. See yellowjackets in walls.
  • The nest is in the ground where kids, pets or a mower will cross it. Ground nests are easy to step on and hard to see.
  • It is a working building such as a barn, rental, church or business with people coming and going.

When It Is Reasonable to Let the Freeze Finish It

Some nests are simply not in anyone’s way. OSU’s yard and garden specialists describe paper wasps, yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets as beneficial insects, both pollinators and predators of soft-bodied pests like caterpillars, while noting that a nest that threatens human safety should be eliminated by a professional (OSU BYGL). Waiting usually makes sense when:

  • The nest is high in a tree, at the back of the property or on an outbuilding nobody uses.
  • You can keep people and pets away from it until cold weather settles in.
  • Nobody in the household has a sting allergy.

If you decide to wait, do not poke, spray or knock the nest down to “help it along.” Disturbing it is the fastest way to get stung, and our article on DIY wasp spray mistakes explains why sprays often backfire.

Make Sure It Is a Wasp Nest

Before deciding anything, confirm what you are looking at. Honeybees do not die off in fall. A honeybee colony in a wall or tree stays alive all winter, and it will not leave on its own. Honeybees, bumblebees and native paper wasps are always relocated by our team, never destroyed. If the insects are fuzzy and golden-brown rather than shiny yellow and black, read our guide to identifying wasps, bees and hornets, or send us a photo.

How Our Late-Season Removal Works

Our wasp and hornet nest removal is pesticide-free. Dangerous nests are taken out by hand or by vacuum rather than sprayed, so nothing is left to rot in a wall or the ground, and native paper wasps are relocated. A photo taken from a safe distance is usually enough for us to tell you whether a nest needs to come out now or can wait for the weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the wasps come back to the same nest next year?

No. Ohio wasp nests are used for one season only. New queens start fresh nests in spring, sometimes in a similar sheltered spot, which is why sealing gaps over the winter helps. Our wasp prevention guide covers what to seal.

Can I take the nest down after it freezes?

Once the colony has died, an empty nest is harmless. Give it time after several hard freezes, and check that no wasps are flying on a warm afternoon before you touch it.

Is November too late to call?

Not if the nest is somewhere people use. As long as wasps are flying, the nest can still sting.

Wasps at Outdoor Wedding Venues and Event Barns: A Checklist

/in /by

Late-summer and early-fall dates are popular for barn weddings, and they’re also peak season for yellowjackets looking for sugar. Wasps at outdoor wedding venues are usually a mix of two problems: nests built into the venue and foragers drawn to drinks and cake. Here’s a walk-through venue owners and couples can use before the big day.

Where Wasps at Outdoor Wedding Venues Nest

Clemson Extension lists the protected spots paper wasps like: roof overhangs, porch ceilings, window and door frames, rafters and under decks or railings. Event barns are full of them. OSU Extension HYG-2075 notes yellowjackets nest in the ground, especially in grassy areas and mulched beds, and in wall voids.

  • Beams and rafters inside barns and pavilions.
  • Eaves, door frames and light fixtures at entrances and photo spots.
  • Railings, benches and arbors used for the ceremony.
  • Ground and mulch beds near paths, parking and lawn games.

Beams, rafters and overhangs in event barns are sheltered spots wasps like.

Drink Stations and Cake Tables

OSU explains that yellowjackets switch from proteins to sweets in late summer, and UC IPM says fall foragers show up at picnics, barbecues and around garbage cans. Sweet drinks and open trash are the main draw.

  • Use lidded dispensers and cups with lids where you can. UC IPM advises covering soda cans so wasps can’t crawl in.
  • Keep trash sealed and emptied, and set cans away from the bar and dance floor.
  • Bring dessert out late and cover it between servings.
  • Place lure traps away from guests. UC IPM says traps should go away from where people gather.
  • Clear fallen fruit if the venue has orchard trees.

When to Schedule a Nest Check

Walk the venue a week or two before the event, looking for wasps flying in and out of one spot. If you find nests near the ceremony site, entrances or tables, call ahead of time so removal isn’t a last-minute scramble. Native paper wasp nests are relocated, and yellowjacket, hornet and European paper wasp nests are removed by hand or vacuum, without pesticides, so there’s no spray residue on tables or benches.

After the Event

Clean-up matters too. Bagged trash left by the barn overnight, stacked cups and leftover cake on a back table are an easy meal for the next morning’s foragers. Close up trash and food the same night, especially for multi-day events or back-to-back weekends.

On the Day

Ask guests with a known sting allergy to bring their medication. CDC NIOSH suggests staying calm and still if a single wasp comes close, and moving indoors if several attack. See how to avoid wasp stings and sting allergies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do perfumes attract wasps?

NIOSH advises outdoor workers to avoid perfumed products, and the same idea applies to guests near drink stations.

Wasps at Dumpsters, Gas Stations and Car Washes: A Business Owner’s Guide

/in /by

Every August the calls start the same way: customers getting stung by the trash corral, at the pumps or in the wash bay. Wasps at dumpsters, gas stations and car washes are almost always yellowjackets, and they’re there for one reason: sugar. Here’s why it happens late in the season and a checklist that cuts the problem down.

Why Wasps at Dumpsters Peak in Late Summer

OSU Extension HYG-2075 explains that yellowjackets switch their food preference from proteins to sweets in late summer, roughly August through October. By then, OSU says, nests reach about 4,000 to 5,000 workers. UC IPM adds that in fall, foraging yellowjackets are mainly scavengers and show up around garbage cans, picnics and barbecues, at pet food left outside and wherever overripe fruit is available. UC IPM notes the number of scavenging wasps can be quite large at certain times and places.

A dumpster full of soda cups, a sticky pump island or a recycling bin of cans is the business version of a picnic table. Car washes add their own hot spots: vacuum stations and the trash cans beside them, where customers empty cups, cans and food wrappers while cleaning out their cars.

Closed dumpster in a clean block enclosure, the first fix for wasps at dumpsters
Closed lids and a clean pad take away most of what draws yellowjackets.

Sanitation and Lid Checklist

  • Keep lids closed. UC IPM advises keeping garbage in sealed containers and emptying it regularly.
  • Bag sweet trash. Ask staff to bag cups, cans and food waste before it goes in the dumpster.
  • Hose the pad. Rinse spills and drips around dumpsters, recycling bins and pump-side trash cans.
  • Empty outdoor cans often, especially by doors, vacuums and pumps.
  • Cover drinks on staff breaks. UC IPM says to cover soda cans outdoors so wasps don’t crawl in.
  • Clean up workspaces. CDC NIOSH notes social wasps thrive where food is discarded.

Traps: Placement Matters

UC IPM notes that yellow lure traps hung around the edge of a property can reduce foraging by some species near patios and picnic areas, and that traps should go away from where people gather. For a business, that means not next to the door or the pump.

When It’s a Nest, Not Just Foragers

Foragers can come from a long way off. But if you see a steady line of wasps into one spot, such as a gap in a block wall, the ground by a curb, a sign cabinet or a light pole base, there’s probably a nest on site. OSU notes yellowjackets can sting repeatedly, often near the nest. That’s when to call. See yellowjacket ground nest removal and yellowjackets in walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will spraying the dumpster help?

Not for long. The draw is the food. Clean, closed containers do more than spraying an area where customers walk.

Is it a customer safety issue?

It can be, especially for anyone with a sting allergy. See sting allergies.

Do you work with businesses?

Yes. See farm and commercial wasp and bee removal and stinging insect safety for workers.

Large wasp at the entrance of a burrow in sandy soil

Cicada Killer vs Yellowjacket: Why Size Doesn’t Equal Danger

/in /by

When a wasp nearly 2 inches long buzzes across the lawn, it’s natural to assume it’s the most dangerous thing in the yard. But in the matchup of cicada killer vs yellowjacket, the big one is usually the gentle one. Size and danger don’t line up. Here’s how to tell them apart and which one actually needs a call.

Cicada Killer vs Yellowjacket at a Glance

  • Size. University of Kentucky Entomology says female cicada killers can be nearly 2 inches long and males about 1.5 inches. OSU Extension HYG-2075 describes a typical yellowjacket worker as about 1/2 inch long.
  • Colony. Cicada killers are solitary. Each female digs and stocks her own burrow. Yellowjackets live in annual colonies that, OSU says, reach about 4,000 to 5,000 workers by August and late September.
  • Food. OSU Buckeye Yard and Garden onLine notes cicada killers feed exclusively on annual cicadas. Yellowjackets hunt insects and, in late summer, switch to sweets, which is why they crash picnics.
  • Sting risk. OSU calls stinging encounters with cicada killers extremely rare and says the females aren’t aggressive. Yellowjackets, OSU notes, can sting repeatedly and often do near the nest.
Several yellowjackets at a single hole in a lawn, the key difference in cicada killer vs yellowjacket nests
Steady traffic of many small wasps through one hole is the classic yellowjacket ground nest.

Reading the Holes

Both can nest in the ground, so the hole itself is the best clue. Cicada killer burrows are about finger-width, often with a fan of loose soil, in sunny, bare or sandy spots. You’ll often see several in one area, each used by a single female. A yellowjacket nest usually has one entrance with a steady stream of small wasps going in and out, and OSU notes these nests are often in grassy areas and mulched beds. See holes in the lawn and ground bees vs. yellowjackets.

Why the Big One Is Calmer

A cicada killer has no colony to defend. UKY says they aren’t considered stinging hazards unless directly disturbed, and the big wasps hovering at eye level are usually males, which can’t sting at all. See male cicada killers. A yellowjacket colony has thousands of workers guarding brood. Run a mower over the entrance and they come out fighting. See yellowjacket ground nest removal.

What We Do About Each

Cicada killers are relocated away from walkways, patios and play areas, with no poison in the soil. Yellowjacket nests are removed by hand or vacuum, without pesticides. Either way, start with a photo from a safe distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could it be a hornet?

OSU Extension ENT-0102 notes cicada killers are often mistaken for European hornets and even northern giant hornets. See giant hornets in Ohio.

Are cicada killers beneficial?

OSU considers them beneficial insects and does not recommend insecticides for them.

Which is worse for a kid with an allergy?

Not Sure Which One You Have?

We relocate cicada killers instead of putting poison into the soil where people and pets walk. Call or text Northwest Ohio Wasp Removal at 419-614-6445, or use our contact page, and send a photo of the wasps or burrows if you can. See cicada killer relocation for how it works.

Myth: Every Hole in the Lawn Is a Yellowjacket Nest. How to ID Holes in the Lawn

/in /by

You find a hole in the grass and assume the worst. But holes in the lawn come from many animals, and most of them aren’t yellowjackets. Before anyone grabs a can of spray or a garden hose, spend a few minutes watching from a safe distance. What goes in and out tells you nearly everything.

Holes in the Lawn: A Quick ID Guide

Yellowjackets: one busy hole, steady traffic

Yellowjacket ground nests usually have a single entrance with a steady stream of wasps flying in and out. Ohio State University Extension warns that nests may be at ground level in grassy areas and mulched beds (OSU HYG-2075). This is the one to take seriously. See yellowjacket ground nests.

Cicada killers: big wasps, sandy soil, midsummer

The University of Kentucky describes cicada killers as large wasps, with females nearly 2 inches long, that dig burrows in dry, sandy, loose soil. Tunnels can be 12 to 15 inches deep. They are not considered stinging hazards unless directly disturbed, and males have no stinger at all (UK ENTFACT-004). See cicada killer relocation.

Ground bees: many small mounds in thin turf

OSU describes ground or digger bees as solitary bees about half an inch long that often nest in groups. Females throw up a soil pile about an inch high and three to four inches across, with the opening in the middle, usually where there’s little plant cover (OSU HYG-2143). See ground bees vs. yellowjackets and sweat bees and mining bees.

Mud chimney built by a burrowing crayfish rising above turfgrass, one of the less obvious holes in the lawn
A mud chimney like this is the work of a burrowing crayfish, not a wasp.

Crayfish: mud chimneys in wet spots

Burrowing crayfish build mud chimneys that can rise 3 to 8 inches above the soil, mostly in poorly drained ground near streams or ditches, according to OSU’s Buckeye Yard and Garden onLine. Don’t pour toxins down the holes. Knock the chimneys down before mowing (OSU BYGL).

Chipmunks: a clean 2-inch hole, no dirt pile

Penn State Extension says chipmunk burrow entrances are about 2 inches across with no mound of dirt, usually hidden near objects or buildings (Penn State Extension).

Other diggers

OSU also notes that many solitary digger wasps prefer open, sandy or light soil and nest where turf is thin with soil showing through. Thin, patchy turf in a sunny spot tends to collect several kinds of ground nesters at once. Thickening the turf is a long-term fix worth talking to a lawn professional about.

What to Do Next

  • Watch, don’t poke. No sticks, hoses or sprays into the hole.
  • Mark it. A flag keeps the mower and the kids away. See keeping kids and pets safe.
  • Take a photo or short video of what flies in and out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I flood the hole?

No. Flooding or spraying a yellowjacket nest can send angry wasps straight at you. See DIY wasp spray mistakes.

Are ground bees dangerous?

OSU notes most solitary ground nesters only sting if you capture or restrain them. Social bumblebees will defend their nests.

Could it be bumblebees?

Yes. Bumblebees often nest in old rodent burrows. See bumblebee nest in the ground.

What about big blue wasps over the grass?

See blue-winged wasps over the lawn.

Still Not Sure?

Yellowjacket standing on the edge of a wooden picnic table

Myth or Fact: Does Killing a Wasp Attract Others?

/in /by

You swat a wasp on the deck and, a minute later, there seem to be three more. Coincidence? Partly. The honest answer to does killing a wasp attract others is “it can,” at least for yellowjackets. Ohio State University Extension warns against squashing a yellowjacket because it releases an alarm pheromone that alerts other yellowjackets to its location (OSU Extension HYG-2075). Here is what that means in real life, and why where you are matters more than the swat itself.

Does Killing a Wasp Attract Others? What the Science Says

Social wasps such as yellowjackets live in colonies and defend them as a group. An alarm pheromone is a chemical signal that tells nestmates something is wrong. OSU’s advice is short: avoid squashing a yellowjacket, and never swat at one flying near you.

The University of California IPM program adds that wasps become very defensive when their nest is disturbed, and that yellowjackets are more likely to sting if they are disturbed while foraging (UC IPM). So the swat is a problem twice over: the wasp you miss may sting, and the one you crush may leave a chemical alarm behind.

Why Distance From the Nest Matters

An alarm signal only works on wasps close enough to pick it up. A single forager at your picnic table may be some distance from its colony. Near the nest it is a different story: there are many more wasps within range, and they are already primed to defend.

  • Away from the nest: a yellowjacket at your soda can is usually hunting for sugar or protein. See what attracts wasps to your yard.
  • Near the nest: wasps flying in and out of one spot in the lawn, wall or shrub mean a colony is close. That is where a swat, a mower or a kick can bring out a crowd. See do wasps chase you?
Paper wasps standing on an open comb nest under a roof eave, where the question of does killing a wasp attract others matters most
Near the nest, many more wasps are close enough to respond to a disturbance.

Why It Seems Like More Wasps Show Up

Sometimes the “others” were coming anyway. OSU explains that in late summer, roughly August through October, yellowjacket food preferences change from proteins to sweets. That’s when they become persistent guests at picnics, scavenging for sugary foods and drinks, and large numbers may be drawn to garbage cans, sweet beverages and fruit. More wasps after a swat may simply be more foragers finding the same soda.

What to Do Instead of Swatting

  • Stay still or move away slowly. UC IPM says that if a wasp lands on you, don’t swat it or run. Wait for it to leave, or gently brush it away.
  • If you’ve disturbed a nest, leave. Clemson Extension advises walking away while covering your face with your hands (Clemson HGIC). OSU says that if you’ve disturbed an entire nest, protect your face and run.
  • Remove the reason they’re there. Lids on drinks, covered food and tight trash lids do more than any swat. See how to avoid wasp stings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do honeybees have an alarm scent too?

Yes. The UC Davis California Master Beekeeper Program notes that a banana-like odor can mimic a honey bee alarm pheromone. See can bees smell fear?

Is it the same for paper wasps and hornets?

The OSU warning is about yellowjackets. All social wasps defend their nests, though, so the safe habit is the same for every species: don’t crush wasps near a nest. See yellowjacket vs. paper wasp.

Does spraying one wasp help?

Spraying near a nest can stir up the colony. See DIY wasp spray mistakes.

Why are there more wasps in late summer?

Colonies are at their largest then. See why wasps get aggressive in late summer and fall.

What Attracts Wasps to Your Yard? The Food, Water and Shelter Checklist

/in /by

If your yard seems to have more wasps than your neighbor’s, there’s usually a reason. Wasps go where food, water and good nest sites are. Knowing what attracts wasps, and how that changes through the season, lets you take away the easy wins without spraying anything. Here’s the short version, then a walk-around checklist.

Food: Protein Early, Sugar Late

Ohio State University Extension explains that adult yellowjackets feed mainly on sugars, such as fruit, nectar and tree sap, while their larvae need protein, such as insects and meat (OSU Extension HYG-2075). The University of California IPM program notes workers forage mainly for protein from spring to midsummer, then turn to sweets in late summer as colony growth slows (UC IPM). OSU puts that shift in Ohio at August through October.

That’s why late-season wasps are so drawn to people food. Clemson Extension lists carbonated beverages, juices, candy, meats, cakes, fruit, vegetables and ice cream (Clemson HGIC). UC IPM adds dishes of dog or cat food placed outside and ripe or overripe fruit, and warns that once wasps discover food, they keep hunting around that spot long after it’s gone.

Pet food left outside gives scavenging yellowjackets an easy meal.

Scents and Clothing

OSU notes yellowjackets are attracted to floral perfumes, hairspray fragrances and bright, flowery clothing. The UC IPM stings guide suggests skipping perfume, cologne and scented soaps in areas with bee and wasp activity (UC IPM: Bee and Wasp Stings).

Water

NC State Extension notes that in hot, dry weather, honeybees and other insects seek out any available water, including pools, water slides and fountains, and that bees and yellowjackets may also be drawn to food in nearby trash cans (NC State Extension).

Shelter: What Attracts Wasps to Build Nests

Clemson describes paper wasps building in protected spots like shrubs, porch ceilings, window and door frames, roof overhangs, attic rafters and under decks (Clemson HGIC: Paper Wasps). OSU notes yellowjackets use animal burrows, thick mulch, rotted stumps and wall voids. Gaps in siding, soffits and vents are open invitations. See wasp nest in siding and wasp nest in a dryer vent.

The Walk-Around Checklist

  • Trash and recycling bins have tight lids and are rinsed of spills.
  • Pet food and water bowls come inside after meals.
  • Fallen fruit is picked up, especially in late summer.
  • Drinks outdoors have lids, and food stays covered until served.
  • Gaps in siding, soffits and trim are sealed once no nest is active.
  • Vents and openings are screened.
  • Bare wood is painted or sealed, which Clemson says makes it harder for nests to attach.
  • Shrubs near the house are trimmed and thinned.

Our wasp prevention guide walks around the whole outside of the house.

Do Wasps Chase You? What Makes Them Follow and How to Get Away

/in /by

Ask anyone who’s mowed over a yellowjacket nest and they’ll tell you: yes, they chased me. But that’s not the whole story. So, do wasps chase you? A lone wasp at your drink almost never does. A colony whose nest you just bumped absolutely can. Knowing the difference, and what to do in each case, keeps a bad moment from getting worse.

Away From the Nest, Wasps Rarely Chase

Ohio State University’s Buckeye Yard and Garden Line notes that, despite their reputation, paper wasps, yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets are seldom aggressive away from their nests (OSU BYGL). A wasp checking out your food is foraging, not defending. Ohio State University Extension’s advice is simple: never swat at a yellowjacket flying near you. Simply walk away (OSU Extension HYG-2075).

The University of California IPM program adds that if a wasp lands on you, don’t swat it or run. Wait for it to leave or gently brush it away (UC IPM).

Near the Nest: Do Wasps Chase You Then?

Yes. Social wasps defend their colony. OSU notes yellowjackets mainly sting to protect the nest, and that any noise or disturbance can provoke painful stinging. UC IPM says ground- and cavity-nesting yellowjackets defend their nests vigorously when disturbed, and that defensive behavior increases as the season goes on and colonies get bigger. That’s why late summer and fall chases are the worst. See aggressive wasps in late summer and fall.

What Makes It Worse

  • Swatting and squashing. OSU warns that squashing a yellowjacket releases an alarm pheromone that alerts other yellowjackets to its location.
  • Fast, flailing movement. Clemson Extension notes that swift movements only attract more yellowjackets (Clemson HGIC).
  • Staying put. UC IPM advises leaving the area of the nest as quickly as possible if wasps start stinging. Their stingers have no barbs and can be used repeatedly, especially if a wasp gets inside clothing.

How to Get Away

  1. Protect your face. OSU says if you’ve disturbed an entire nest, protect your face and get away. Clemson recommends covering your face with both hands.
  2. Leave the area. Don’t stop to swat. Move steadily away from the nest.
  3. Get inside. Clemson suggests heading for a building or vehicle, or into dense vegetation.
  4. Check for stings and clinging wasps once you’re clear, and shake out clothing away from others.

After that, watch for warning signs. See multiple wasp stings and emergency removal for sting allergies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I avoid a chase in the first place?

Walk the yard before mowing and watch for steady traffic at one spot. See how to avoid wasp stings and yellowjacket ground nests.

Do honeybees chase people?

How to Avoid Wasp Stings: 12 Everyday Habits That Keep Wasps Calm

/in /by

Most wasp stings aren’t bad luck. They happen when someone gets too close to a nest, swats at a wasp, or takes a sip from a can a yellowjacket crawled into. Knowing how to avoid wasp stings mostly comes down to small habits. These 12 come straight from university extension advice and work in the yard, on the porch and at the picnic table.

At the Table: How to Avoid Wasp Stings While Eating Outdoors

  • 1. Put lids on drinks. Ohio State University Extension recommends keeping beverages, especially fruit drinks, sodas and beer, in covered cups or containers with lids (OSU Extension HYG-2075).
  • 2. Check cans before you sip. OSU warns a wasp may have crawled inside. Clemson Extension notes people have swallowed live yellowjackets and been stung in the throat, which can be life-threatening (Clemson HGIC).
  • 3. Cover food until it’s served. Clemson recommends covering food and beverage containers, and OSU says to clear dirty dishes right away.
  • 4. Sit away from the trash. OSU suggests choosing a picnic spot well away from uncovered trash cans or dumpsters.

Around the House

  • 5. Use tight trash lids. Clemson says garbage can lids should fit tightly, and OSU recommends keeping cans clean of spilled food.
  • 6. Bring pet food in. The University of California IPM program recommends keeping food, including pet food, covered or indoors (UC IPM).
  • 7. Pick up fallen fruit. UC IPM advises picking up and disposing of ripe fruit. See what attracts wasps to your yard.
  • 8. Keep screens repaired. OSU recommends keeping screens on doors and windows in good repair.

In the Yard

  • 9. Walk the lawn before you mow. OSU warns that ground nests may be in grassy areas and mulched beds, and not to run a mower or trimmer over one. Watch for wasps flying in and out of one spot. See yellowjacket ground nests.
  • 10. Skip the floral scents and prints. OSU notes yellowjackets are attracted to floral perfumes, hairspray fragrances and bright, flowery clothing.

When a Wasp Shows Up

  • 11. Don’t swat. Walk away. OSU’s advice is to never swat at a yellowjacket flying near you. UC IPM adds that if a wasp lands on you, don’t swat it or run. Wait for it to leave, or gently brush it away.
  • 12. Don’t squash it. OSU notes that squashing a yellowjacket releases an alarm pheromone that alerts other yellowjackets.
